How do you get declared unfit to drive?

I definately am! I faint 2-3 times a week with no warning and got told not to even think about learning to drive by all my doctors.

My DLA is going in December and my bus pass is expiring. Is it really a case of filling in the provisional form and sending off my cheque to have my cheque sent back with a NO letter or is there another form i need to be declared unfit to drive?

Thank you.

  • Hi Glaswejen,

Bumping your post:D I believe you need a letter from your docs stating you are not fit to drive but where you send it to - sorry I don't know - if you are in Glasgow go to the offices next to Queen Street station they will be able to help. You certainly do not need to go to the expense of getting a provisional licence.
  • There's a form here:

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/MedicalRulesForDrivers/DG_10010623

If you scroll down there's a downloadable questionnaire for drives who have fits or blackouts, but most of the information seems to be geared to people who need to surrender a licence, rather than someone who needs to be refused a licence.

Sorry I can't be more help.

You could try sending notification from your GP to the DVLA - they will ascertain fitness to drive from your GP and others.

Do you need this to renew your bus pass? In my area you would send a letter from your GP with your bus pass application.

    Hope this helps

Because I'm only 22 I either need DLA or to be medically unfit to drive so my doctor can't help much.
  • Depends who you need the proof for. If it is the DVLA then your GP needs to be involved. If it is for a bus pass then again, a letter from your GP will suffice.

I've found 2 relevant questionnaires on the DVLA website, it would appear that i apply and send these off and the DVLA will then decide based on these and the doctors opinion.
