Wireless connection help - warning, idiot alert!

Ok, I know this is a STUPID question, but I have NO clue when it comes to WiFi, so I'm gonna ask anyway!

I'm looking to buy a lappy with WiFi. I have AOL broadband, with a wireless router that is currently plugged into the pc using the normal cable thingy. If I get a laptop with WiFi, will I have to call up AOL and ask them to change anything so that I can get a wireless connection, or is it just a case of sticking the aerial back on and loading the software onto the lappy?

You don't need to load any software on your nice new PC! Your home wireless network is of no concern to AOL, just switch the laptop on, find your network name (SSID and connect. Job done with no AOL crap on your machine!

Yay! That's even better - haven't used the silly AOL screen since I got the pc! Thanks very much :T

  • Yes ideally WPA or preferably WPA2 for the best protection. Use a passkey generated from GRC (well known and trusted) for example or make your own, as long as it very long ansd complicated. Have a good passwrod for your router too, nothing easy to guess, with a mixture of UPPER and lower case letters, numbers and special characters i.e 1L!k32E@Tf15h&C4!p5 (I like to eat fish and chips)
  • Ok, neither of those last two posts made much sense, but I'm sure I can firgure it out when I get up and running..... now just have to choose a laptop! That's an art in itself!
