nissan almera engine problem

we have a nissan almera 1.4 petrol (y reg) which will not rev above 10000, the engine idles and the car goes at about 10 mph. Garage have looked at it and said could possibly be control unit but only possibly. Any ideas would be grateful.

Hi hev1, welcome to MSE :)

There was a recall regarding a crankshaft sensor malfunction and a further recall on 'angle and sensor' malfunctions again, details on Honest John's car-by-car breakdown though these seem to concern the car stalling and failing to start. Do you know whether it was recalled in the above instances?
  • only had car 1 year no recall as far as we know.
  • It could be any number of things. Did the garage put the car on a diagnostic machine?
  • yes they did but didnt show exact problem, after going through wiring system they replaced an earthing wire which seemed to fix problem. but after test run of about 8miles car lost power and once again wouldn't rev above10,000.
Garage reluctant to install control unit as very expensive and might not solve problem. got onto nissan about whether ours is a recall or not am waiting to hear back thanks for the suggestion Crabman.
  • it will be one of the sensors i reckon, or a blocked fuel filter or the low pressure pump
  • while waiting for nissan to get back went on AA site which has a list of recalls for nissan ours is not on it.

There load of potential but any decinet garage dignostics computer should have been able to find it even without a computer you could work it out giving a bit of time.
  • just been on another site where someone else had same problem a while back. they suggested that the fault occured because he may have changed a bulb. hey presto he had and had put the wrong type of bulb back in. a quick check with a dealership and he had the right bulb and the car is working fine. We had the car MOTed 6 months ago and the one fault we had was a faulty bulb which was duly changed. I know it sounds far fetched but is it at all possible that this is the problem.
  • oh the web site was ilexa onboard diagnostics forum
  • how can a bulb screw the engine up?!
