Tax Refunds for 1st child

My wife and I have had a lovely little boy in the middle of August. Her employer only pays her 10 weeks maternity pay and now she is on her statutory maternity pay of £100 per week.

My wife earns a relatively good wage and I assume that the tax she has paid so far this year is based on her earning a similar monthly wage every month, which she obviously will NOT for the next 4 months of the financial year. What I would like to know is who do we have to contact in order to try and get some the tax back we have already paid?

Have I explained this correctly?

Thanks

  • If she is paid monthly, her tax code (the amount you can earn tax free) will be split equally across the 12 months of the year, so each month you are only taxed on the portion of salary over the limit.

The normal tax code is 603L which gives tax free income of £500 per month. Only if she's earning less than this in any months would she be due a rebate.

SMP is £117 per week, which equals £507 per month, so she won't be paying any tax while just on smp anyway.

If you check your wifes payslip it will either have a M1/Y/X beside the tax code of just the tax code.

As long as your wife continues working for her current employers and does not have a M1/X/Y tax code she should receive the tax refund automatically through her pay each month, if she has a M1/X/Y tax code then she will need to contact HMRC to have her tax correct.

If she has left her current company or plans to she will need to complete a P50 from HMRC website.

Hope this make sense. I work in payroll for a living so can explain in more detail if you like.
