VAT on home improvements

I am planning to have central heating installed in my house. There has never been central heating before. Can a non vat-registered individual reclaim the VAT element of the cost?

I am not too sure about this - but I believe it only applies to new build homes not improvements, but I'll let others to confirm this.

I am afraid that ToAoB is correct

"If an existing building is extended or refurbished, and this does not create a new, separate dwelling (which would be capable of being used and disposed of independently) the construction and associated materials will be standard rated."

So no vat reclaim is possible.
