Design a new Website..help

Not sure where this should go but basically i am looking to open a new (SMALL) website online which will enable me to sell soem goods through it.

I went to school with a few people whose parents design clothes - and although they arent Massive named brands, they sell qwuite well on ebay etc.

Problem being, i find that if you have more than one item of the same thing listed at the same time people generally think they are fake, and so dont buy. I put all proof i can on there but they seem to sell if its one at a time - which doesnt make money quick enough!!

Was thinking of a market stall but not to sure how to get into this...

Anyone know any good but relitively cheap web designers/hosting packages i could use?

Was thinking fast hosts but this looks a lil expensive?

  • Hello MrsPitcher2b,

Im a PHP Developer (programmer) lurking around the forums, I will give you my 2cents.

You can start a professional free on-line shop with oscommerce.com normally people pay a lot for this kind of software but its open source free. Has a great forum to learn you or get someone to customise the site for you.

Here is a list of UK Clothing Shops useing oscommerce. You can use this for insperation, ideas but you can also do WhoIs search to find out where these UK Online Shops are hosting their website, to ensure you have a low cost high stability host.

I have good experiance with hosts:
1and1.co.uk - Good deals for domain & hosting
    names.co.uk
    rackforce.com

Since this is a Money Saving forum, I could advice you to install WAMP Server on your computer. You can use this when starting your website, this will reduce your startup costs as you do not need to buy hosting or domain. If all goes well you can then do so or upgrade your internet connection and host your website off of your own computer useing WAMP. (not adviced, if/when you get big).

    Hope I have helped.
  • If you're UK based then I can personally recommend Wiser Hosting, based in Totnes, for hosting.

I use them, and for 25 quid a year for hosting and everything you need to put a website online, you can't go wrong. I use one £25 a year package to host 3 sites and it still manages.

For the actual creation of a website, dont bother with bespoke, expensive custom websites. Get something premade, that requires little, to no coding experience to setup on a host, such as a free, open source shop CMS, like OSCommerce.

And if you really don't want to deal with putting the site online and dealing with a webhost, you can always use a company that provides prebuilt shop software, that are willing to deal with hosting as well.

I used an online generator called MerlinWebWizard, and for a few hundred quid, I had a website up and running live, with my own logo, so all I had to do was upload the products and start selling!

    Sunshine,

Please see the site rules from the top of every page.

'Don't post links for personal gain. Except in the referrers section and always declare any interest.'

I'd suggest you remove your post above, and find a more appropriate way to advertise. I realise you're trying to help, but you can't do it on the forum.
