strange message on laptop

When I switched on the laptop before it said
one disc needs to be checked for consistency! and loads of writing and numbers came up and kept running up the screen. Any ideas? thanks

Sounds like the laptop wasn't shut down correctly. This boot is correcting any errors it finds with the state of system files.0

OOps I did pull out the mains cord straight after switching off!! should I be running this message when we switch on, it felt like it was going on forever, so stopped it mid flow! don`t want to cause daughter any problems.

Yes, you need to let it do what it needs to do without interruption or it could possibly compound the problem even further.
In future you need to allow the laptop to finish shutting itself off before removing the powersource, otherwise you run a high risk of corrupting the data on the drive (a mild form has happened here), moreso not allowing the hard drive to finish it's shut down procedure could cause physical damage to the disk and the complete loss of your files.0 -
