...but touch the wrong part of the board with your static-charged hand and you could fry something?! Not quite 'childsplay'

    Hi Katies Mum

If you are deciding on a brand new desktop, can you give me a few details please on what you will be using it for (playing games, storing and changing photos, accounts, watching TV and so on), a rough price guide, anything special it will need (like the wirless). There are so many out there from a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand pounds, so a little information would help narrow the field down

The previous posters are quite correct in saying that a lot of PC work is easy to do. A great deal is just unplug one bit, and plug in a new bit. But I know how intimidating it all is when you look inside and see a plethera of wires and microchips all over the place, but I can do a few minor things now, more memory, new graphic cards and such, so if I can, pretty much anyone can hehe

    Look forward to your reply

    Hi

Thanks for your reply, and for everyones advice. I think I`m not going to repair this Dell, just don`t know if I can take the risk of it not breaking again!! or ending up a bigger problem than we think......also as I`m not computer illiterate so makes it even harder I suppose. I`m sitting here next to it and its buzzing and sounds ready to take off and all its doing is `being switched on``.

I have been looking at the HP slimline! they sound ok but can`t find any reviews. John Lewis have S3552 at £550 and on the HP site is a S3652 which would be a similar price with the 10% off. I want it to be faster than this Dell, have a card reader for XD cards, wireless, usb, firewire etc, DVD/CD writer, quiet, very quiet, smallish, good graphics etc, think you can see as much as possible really as hoping this one may last a bit longer than the Dell.

Daughters laptop is Hp and this is good and faster than my Dell.

I do lots of work on Word (we have this disc) photos, would like to watch TV and work at the same time now that would be good.

As you can see want it to do everything including making the odd cuppa.

I appreciate any suggestions. Many thanks.

If you leave the mains cable plugged in but powered off and earth yourself off the case before you touch anything you'll be ok. If you're really bothered you can get a wrist strap and static mat from Tandy for not much money.
Nothing to see here, move along.
