The Three D's! Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia and Dyslexia

Through the advanced screening form at my HE College and my own concerns I have been passed onto Study Support to be tested for the three listed above.

I've spoken to them this morning and the lady has identified that there is something there and as they're so interlinked she wouldn't like to say what it could be - but that it could be any of them as I showed some issues with all.

My question is please - what happens at an assessment? I don't mind being assessed but I really can't handle the 'unknown' and prefer some prior knowledge so I can process it.

Thanks :)

It depends on the test. I had several but one was the webster test that involved using shapes and rearranging them to match a picture, I also had to put cards in order of the story printed on them.

Because i was 19 when i was assessed i was diagnosed as being "dyslexia - like" as i had developed techniques to overcome the dys- on my own and so it was hard for the test to say how bad i actually was.

The test is nothing to worry about, the time flew in for me.
  • The tests are like to contain a mix of the following. These could vary slightly depending on interview answers and other test results. One word of caution - don't be tempted to pratice tests as these could skew the results on the day of the formal assessment.
    • An interview - education/working history
    • Verbal ability e.g. describing the meaning of words
    • Perceptual ability - the tests described by the previous poster
    • Reading tests - ability to pronounce single words, ability to read longer passages (both aloud and silent), comprehension test, sentence completion i.e. fill in the missing word.
    • Writing / spelling tests - single words, speed of handwriting, legibility of handwriting
    • Working memory tests - recalling increasing numbers of digits both forwards and backwards.
    • Processing auditory and visual information e.g. copying symbols
    • Some sort of numeracy test
    • Phonological tests - ability to work with sounds e.g. breaking words up, sounding out nonsense words
    • Questions/tests about sequencing information and co-ordination
A typical assessment would be 1.5-2.5 hours. None of the individual tests take more than a few minutes.

i'd post to say the same as blackeburg, but that'd be pointless!

i was diagnosed dyslexic at age 23 whist studying for a Masters degree and learning to drive. all sorts of odd things came out and i was sent for testing like the OP. my educational phsychologist was amazed i'd gotten so far in the educational system and felt sorry for me i'd had no help but was also really pleased i'd coped for so long - i seemed like an interesting case for him! - Dont worry about it - some bits will feel silly / easy / stupid / but it's all for the best to find out. good luck :0)

it was all very interesting and i'm glad i now have explanations for some of my 'problems' but do wonder what next? is there any help avalible to help me with my memory, organisation skills and number? if you get any advice, please do pass it on!

Thanks very much guys, much appreciated :)
  • Good luck

I've just been through a set of cognitive tests this summer with a Neuro Psychologist..after trying to get some for 16 years..and have results similar to ADD but wasn't given any particular guidance beyond some simple general management ideas
..except things like no multi-tasking..and I have auditory neuro pscyhomotor..something processing problems..bit iffy on that as it was given to me aurally as feedback..I wasn't give a written copy of the results..
    remove distractions eg music..
do things in small chunks..and repeat repeat if necessary;)
take notes..and use notes to help trigger things I have learnt..rather than try and haul whole piece of information from my RAM memory:D
avoid busy places..eg shop when quieter

I have no musical, sound, music, visual memory, taste, smell memory which the tests didn't really test and memory delay for retest was only half an hour so i don't think they gave an accurate test of my real memory problems..

So anything you learn yes please would love any more info:j

My tester t=couldn't belive i had manged to get so far either!!! And he was really annoyed at my schools as according to him i was classic case. It's best to know, i know get help at work and don't have to do certain tasks like taking minutes etc
