  • Hi the Gaggia site is very good , but I did save 60.00 pounds at Italy Outlet . 160.00 instead of 230.00 from Gaggia. Full warranty machine Coffee Deluxe & free coffee, delivered in 5 days. Its 199.00 on Amazon at the moment.
  • If it's the Deluxe you bought, were you looking on the right section on the Gaggia site, as it is £145 there, with free coffee also, didn't check the postage though.

I'm kicking myself a little for asking this as I'm constantly harping on about value for money vs cheapness on the subjects I know a bit about (digicams and bikes...) But....

What kind of costs can I get away with for a decent setup? I'm getting the vibe that the grinder is as or more important than the espresso machine and the rock bottom is to get pre-grinded stuff. So has anyone some suggestions for a cofee newbie on a pretty tight budget?

    E.M.
  • I'd go for a cheapy machine from Argos to start with, and buy good quality espresso coffee already ground. I think my error in the past has been the grind of my coffee, not the machine. Also, let the espresso come through before trying to froth the milk, another of my mistakes, to try to froth the milk whilst the coffee was brewing.

Good luck, hope you learn from my expensive mistakes!

bj- you dont drink espresso with milk do you?? Thats against the Barista law! Short and black with lots of sugar is the only way.!
Happiness is wanting what you have, not having what you want.

    Sugar

Then again the Italians tend to drink it that way, and in theory thickening the nectar with sugar should make it linger on the taste buds longer!

  • I'm tempted by a cheap setup (again with the C word) after a trip to sicily a year and a half back. I've been using my italian cafetiere in the mean time...

Oh and they served it nice and sweet.

I was in John Lewis yesterday and saw a (deap breath) morphey richards machine for about £30-£40 any idea if this is the kind of thing to kick off with?

bj Sailor: a machine to produce shots, steam and hot water will have a boiler and a heat exchanger (HX) that produces hot water and steam on demand- not "or". Often with an E61 grouphead.

Anyone considering starting off or upgrading- buy a good burr grinder and freshly roasted beans and grind them as and when needed. Lavazza or Illy (ground or beans) from the supermarket isn't gonna do it..

For comparison my £25 Argos espressomaker (15 bar) currently makes better coffee than my £50 Gaggia Gran. But my Bezerra makes better coffee than both put together ;)
