Yes Savvy Sue, Pharmacists are undervalued in my opinion.

Agreed but no mere mortal can work miracles. It is quite common for a post-viral cough to last for 6-8 weeks or even longer, so the answer is patience and plenty of hydration!

    That doesn't bear thinking about!

He was almost blue in the face last night with a coughing fit. His cough now sounds different at night and first thing in the morning. All day it's like a dry tickle but when he wakes up especially, it sounds a little more productive for a short while before becoming a dry tickle again.

He's been staying in a lot but as soon as he goes out in the cold air, he's coughing like an old man. (sorry to all old men out there ;) .)

If his tickle could just lessen even, that would help.

I think the honey did have a slight effect btw. It didn't last very long but it did at least give him a little while without coughing.

I'll try the cough nurse ... the sedative bit appeals to me. :D

    Thanks for all replies.

Has the doctor checked him for asthma - just that when i was 26 i had a cough that lasted for around 8 weeks which i couldn't shift so i went to the doctors, and he sent me to the asthma nurse for a check up and she said i had mild asthma, that normally wouldn't cause any probs but because i had a cough it had played havoc with my system, so i ended up with two inhalers one that i had to do morning and night and one when i needed it, it worked wonders and really helped.

Now though i don't need my inhalers unless i have a cough or cold and they really do help.

Just a word about cough medicine - there is actually no medicine that will cure a cough unfortuantley, but the medicine will help relieve some of the symptoms such as sore throat.

Actually that was in the back of my mind tbh and it's my intention to take him back to the Doctor sooner rather than later if there is no sign of it lifting. In the meantime, I'll just have to lock him in the cellar.

Only kidding...we dont even have a cellar. ;)

That's because his airways are constricting as a reaction to the cold. A salbutamol inhaler used responsibly before going outside is the answer, but he will have to get a diagnosis from the doc first before they can contemplate issuing a script and be taught how to use it effectively.

PS I recommend this only as a short-term measure whilst the cough is debilitating.

  • As a temporary relief for your son's coughing.
Put an electric kettle in his room.
Half fill it with water. (If you full it, it will splutter water over the top).
    Take the lid off.
    Switch it on.
This way it will continue boiling without switching itself off. The steam in his room will help suppress his cough.
Also....rub his chest and back with vapour rub and make sure he has on something more than a t-shirt - preferably a long sleeve top.
    Hope it helps.
