Windows XP - problem loading

My Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop uses Windows XP. Last night I switched it on and it part booted, upto the stage where the Windows logo appears for a while, and then the screen goes blank just before the screen that displays the logon screenames.

It boots ok in 'safe-mode', but wont boot up ordinarily. Does anyone know what's gone wrong with it?

Boot into Safe Mode, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore and restore it to the last one where it was working OK.

Thanks, yes I tried that already, but the problem remains. whe it tried to reboot after restore the same sympton appeared so I had to switch it off the reboot again in safe-mode. When I rebooted in safe mode it then said that it had been restored to an earlier date.

I'd uninstall any software you recently added while you are in safe mode, sounds like a driver issue

worse case the Dell 1300 had a hidden factory restore partition , just back up your documents and restore it using that

    Thanks for your help.

I downloaded the Dell manual and realised that there's a partition with the original setup and was about to start taking my files off the laptop prior to resetting it to day one. Having left it overnight I thought I'd have a go at restoring it again and hey presto, it's worked, and things are now ok again. So I'm not sure what happened in the first place. I was using the laptop last night and all was ok. I shut the lid on it for an hour or so and so it then goes into some sort of standby mode, and when I tried to switch it on again this problem presented.
