dont know if this is in the right place, been looking for ages and couldnt find anything else that was to do with DVLA. so, can anyone advise please? my daughter in law was going away for a while, and it was about the time her car tax was due, so she wrote to dvla to tell them that as she was going to be away, the car was going to be off road. she hadnt had a tax renewal notice at that time (and still hasnt!!) . when she came back a couple of weeks ago, she found she had a letter from dvla, fining her £40 for not taxing the car or declaring it off road!! this was during the last week of october. she immediately taxed it as she was now back and would be using it, and taxed it from the begininng of that month (october) and again wrote to dvla and told them what had been happening, and that she had previously written, but they say that because the fine has already been issued, she still has to pay. is this correct?

she sorned it by a letter because her tax reminder hadnt been received, and it still hasnt!!! they say they never got the letter that sorned it. and because she has been away, she wasnt aware that an acknowledgement hadnt been received by her.0

Did she go to the Post Office and get a V890 ‘Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN)’form to fill in and send off or just write a letter?
If she didn't fill in the correct form I suspect she won't be able to get out of paying. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
no, just by letter. it was all very last minute, she was packing to go to visit her family in canada then remembered about the car so just fired off a letter before it got forgotten. my son has done the same before and it was accepted as a sorn. think she has just got someone on a bad day!! oh well, £40 out of pocket then. thanks to everyone for advice.xxx0
