from what I can remember its actually illegal for companys to own, let alone stock food which is past its use by date (and I mean use by, not sell by...two very different things).0

They can't sell stuff past its sell-by date either. The only thing they can sell (provided it's OK) is stuff with a best-before date. And eggs must be sold not less than 7 days before their use-by date.
I don't know about what they're allowed to have on their premises, though.0
