Reclaiming money sent to my closed Natwest account

Hello,

2-3 years ago, I had a current account with Natwest, which was closed sometime last year at my request.

My Natwest details were logged with a website which would pay me revenue into my bank account. I forgot to update the bank details on this site when I closed the Natwest account. About a month ago I requested a payment from the website, which they processed. However, when the money did not arrive in my new First Direct account (replacement for the Natwest), I checked online and found that the old details had been used, so theoretically the money has been sent to an account which is now closed.

I contacted the website who told me that the money had not been returned to them and that I should contact Natwest. However, I was wondering if anyone could advise me as to what the usual policy for closed accounts receiving funds is? Is there a longer time before the money is returned to the sender, or is the money actually held in the closed account until someone claims it, and if not it goes to the treasury?

Thanks for your time and help.

H.

It isn't held in the closed account until somebody claims it - if an account is closed then the funds won't reach it. When I worked for NatWest, the funds would have been returned to the originator straight away although this could have changed. There is a possibility that it is sitting in a suspense account somewhere with the Website's bank.

Hi, and thanks fo that. I'll check this with Natwest tomorrow, there is a very remote possibility the account was not 'properly closed', and as there would have been no funds in it when it was closed by my request, I haven't heard anything from Natwest about it.

If NW tell me that have no record of the account, I'll get onto the website and have them check it further.

    Thanks.
