attaching kids gloves to coats?

How do you do it??
Last year I made long strands of wool, twisted them together and sewed them into the lining of his sleeves - thought this was very clever of me!
BUT, bless himmy DS (aged 3 at the time) keps getting his hands stuck in the arms and i ended up cutting off my handy work and buying about 3 pairs of gloves!

So this year, i've got him and my 2 year old DD to "glove up" - what's the best way of doing it please??? thanks

  • The old fashioned way was to sew each glove to the end of a long piece of elastic. then thread up one arm of the coat and down the other.

and as kids we used them as weapons to spin round and slap each other with or got tangled in them!

My mum used to do that but she always cut the elastic too short so it always felt like my arms were on springs lol :) I'll never forget the feeling of a chilly glove whizzing up my sleeve, it happened every time I took them off :)
  • I did try elastic last year, but my DS kept getting all stuck in the bit I had threaded through! bless

I did see a child with some sort of glove clips attaching the gloves to his sleeves - but have never seen them in the shops!

Can't you just sew the kids into their coats and gloves (and hats?) in October and then cut them out again in the spring?

(.... no I'm not a Mum, does it show?)

I used to use ribbon or bias binding tape. I sewed the ends to the gloves then the middle of the tape mid-point at the collar where the hanging loop is. That doesn't make sense does it lol ?

my dd has a coat which has a small tab on each glove with a button attached to it and a loop up in the sleeve so you button them into the sleeve.

Not sure if thats a great description but..
  • Much to everyones amusement I have done this to my own gloves this year. Having lost atleast 6 pairs last winter I decieded it was better to look silly. Although this is the same woman who has to have a purse and keys on a lanyard so she doesn't loose them, but still does...

I used knicker elastic (about 4mm in width, sewn into the heel of the glove, so inline with the little finger rather than the thumb. I guess the length from the armspan but if I do it too long I just put a knot in it so to speak.
  • I used to use a long length of knicker elastic and thread the gloves through the sleeves. I think I threaded it through the hanging loop as well to stop too much 'flapping about'.

I have a feeling that some schools don't like this though as there is a minute risk of strangulation. I guess silly horseplay or bullying could lead to elastic round neck.......

I like the loops at the end of sleeves idea I'm sure that could be adapted. Maybe loops on the gloves and a velcro loop on the coat so gloves could be detached and washed after snowballing !
