Laptop purchasing advice please

I would like to purchase a suitable laptop for my daughter for her 18th birthday in december but I'm not the brightest spark when it comes to computers. Knowing what to buy to make sure that I get the right tool for the job, value for money and I dont' get fobbed off by some spotty salesperson whos going to sell me an end of line piece of crap is paramount. The relevant criteria for my purchase are as follows: my daughter is in her second year at college doing her a levels ( all A's for her first year) then off to university to study to become a vet, a minimum of 6 years of study. The laptop is therefore going to be a vital piece of hardware to help in her studies which I wish to provide for her but I feel my budget of around £300 ish is going to restrict the quality and performance of the laptop. This purchase is an important one as I want her to have the right tools to help her in her studies and also be a special gift to celerbrate and remember her 18th, shes the last of 4. I dont want to let her down but my finances are dire to say the least but come what may I will provide with your help friends so all information and help pointing me in the right direction with this purchase will be most gratefully received and appreciated. I'm open to suggestions please.

Basically performace wise, it's hard to go wrong. It needs to have Wifi and if its running Vista, 1GB RAM. Other than that, pretty much everything else will suffice.
Stick to brand names so that's Acer, Compaq, HP, Sony, Lenovo (IBM) and Toshiba. The Medion ones Aldi do are good value. Avoid E Systems and Advent - poor build quality.

    Don't bother with 2nd hand
    Have a look in Tesco

Make a note of the make, model, spec, price and post it here.

go to ebuyer.com and look there.....great value
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.
