I paid for item in Euro's, got refund from Paypal but ........

not quite the same amount. I paid 20 Euros's which came out of my account as £14.17 but when I got a refund from Paypal it is showing as 20 Euro's still but only £13.07 - why the difference when the 20 Euro's is the same?

If you paid £14.17 you should get back £14.17, i'd email paypal and ask why there is a difference.

I know it's not much difference but i'd rather fight to get the full amount then sit back and wonder if its gone straight into paypals pocket...

Of course it will make a difference. If the exchange rate has changed, and as its a chargeback its possibly been in process for 30+ days so the rate will most certainly have changed, then your amount refunded in pounds will also change because your payment in Euro's and refund in Euro's was the same.

I just went on paypals website and pretended to send 20 euros and it said

€20.00 EUR (equal to £13.94 GBP)

So if anything then thats what you should have got back

This refund came through yesterday so maybe the rates have changed again since then? I did ask if I could pay in sterling before auction ended, seller said it was ok but kept sending me Euro invoices anyway, will know to be more careful in future.

I can understand the rates changing, but that seems quite a big change.

20 / 14.17 = 1.4114326

20 / 13.07 = 1.5302219

That's a difference of 0.1187893. The maximum difference between the lowest and highest points that the exchange rate has been over the past 30 days is 0.02848. So those figures don't match up if it's just due to the exchange rate.

I'm not sure what they charge when it comes to refunds like yours. If you pay for something, then they usually take their fee by having a smaller exchange rate than the actual current exchange rate, and they also charge the seller a 'cross border fee'.

You might be able to find details of any fees that were paid on the details page for that PayPal transaction.

Do Paypal take small charges? I thought they only did large ones?!

I just had an unfair complaint against me that I've lost even though I sent the item. I lost £3 on currency differences and the item (still in contact with Royal Mail) and all the ebay fees. I'm not happy and really will not use paypal again this time!
