Taking a car from the States into Canada

Good morning all

Hope you're having good weekends. I just wondered if anyone knew about taking a car from the States into Canada. My plan is to fly into Boston and then buy a car to drive across the States in around 3 months. Once I've reached the West coast of the States I want to drive up up to Canada and come back across to Toronto before flying home.

I've tried Google and various forums but there seems to be a distinct lack of information out there!

If anyone has any advice I would be very keen to hear it.

Thanks in advance.

http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/index.jspa might help - try the USA FAQs

Gist of the advice there is that buying a car in the US is for a non-resident foreigner difficult to the point of inadvisability but not absolutely impossible.

Importing that car into Canada adds a whole new level of difficulty if you are not going back to the US with it. (registration, roadworthiness, different standards) Try the various Canadian provinces road authority web sites (DMV may be the term) . Saying you are going back to the US would be a lot easier - but you still have the problem of getting rid of it.

And don't forget that for your length of trip you will need a US visa - allow plenty of time to get it.

I thought that under the VWP you could stay up to 90 days?
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

Yes - in North America. The 90 days includes time spent in Canada after leaving the USA.

And the original post is fairly clear that he's staying 3 months plus, which is more than 90 days..

Ok - I read "around 3 months" and thought that 90 days IS around 3 months!
Having re-read it ISWYM now, driving across US for 3 months THEN into Canada, so mare than 3 months in total.

I promise to read more carefully next time!:D
