Wheelchair supply or loan

I have bought two wheelchairs over the years one second hand one that lasted ages and a relatively new one from boot sale.It has gone all rusty where I sat on beach in it in the summer (i used to do same with old one and that didn't go rusty). Also I am very obese and the sides have bowed out and my clothing keeps getting stuck.
I am not wheelchair bound and walk as far as I can but I need to keep sitting down and also when I have had enough my Husband will push me for a while then I have another go at walking.
I also use the wheelchair when we go to the theatre etc.as there is no way I could sit in their stalls.
My problems are osteo arthritis spondilitis and chronic asthma. I also have a lot of trouble with sciatic nerve. One Doctor in the past said a wheelchair would make me less mobile but it is actually the reverse as if I haven't got wheelchair with me I wont walk anywhere incase I cant get back or need to rest.
As an occupational therapist do you think that would qualify me for a wheelchair? We now have car on motability which is nice but leaves no spare money for another wheelchair.0 -
Yes your medical history should qualify you for a wheelchair which is for outdoor use. in my area these take a few weeks to be delivered as a pose to days if you are wheelchair bound. You should get a proper referral and assessment as you will then be measured and they would provide the most suitable one for you especially given your size and weight - it may be dangerous to get a second hand one. Try looking for an 'independant living centre' in your area, these places are usually run by ot's and in our area you can just turn up or make an appointment where the staff can advise on not just wheelchairs but all types of equipment and also holidays and leisure activities.0
