Is it true that when you're with any gas supplier apart from British Gas, you pay a hidden rental fee for that companys use of the meter (which belongs to British Gas)
How does this weigh up and compare on prices.

No, this isn't true. British Gas don't own any meters (Gas or Electricity).
Even in the cases where meters are owned by a company in the same group as a supplier (mainly electricity in the old electricity board regions) they are not allowed to offer their sister companies better deals.
The actual ownership of the meters is a bit odd,* but most gas meters in Britiain are owned by National Grid Metering, with some other compaines (e.g. United Utilities, OnStream & Siemens Energy) getting a bigger share as they install their own meters.
* The meter is owned by one company, but all actions are taken by a very similar but legally different company0 -
