Its just an alternative to IDE /SATA, but of IIRc there are about 4 or 5 different types (then each type has different speeds/bandwidths)
SCSI uses a totally different connecter to IDE, with SCSI there are 2 types, internal and external, both having a slightly different
SCSI has teh ability to be daisy-chained so that unlike IDE, which has 2 items per cable max, SCSI can easily take 5+ items per cable.
SCSI is used in in servers / large business setups mainly.
Have a look at thi swiki

If you were using one on a home computer, you would most likely need a SCSI controller on your motherboard as most "home computer" motherboards only have an IDE controller. Most modern motherboards have support for SATA as well.
I'm probably wrong, but I usually go by the saying that SCSI is faster than IDE and that is why it is used in servers and computers constantly accessing their Hard Drives.
Although it does have lots of additional information you probably don't need to know, WikiPedia is your friend: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCSI tigermatt
