This is my first post so I hope this is in the right place!

I need to find an architect in the south wales area to draw up some plans for a conversion, does anybody know of someone with a good reputation that's not going to cost the earth?! On that note, how much should I be prepared to pay for an architect per hour?

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Firstly do you need planning permission? You do not require very sophisticated plans for planning and it would be best to get advice on this before you invest in an architect. You can get "outline" planning consent without having to go into much detail. I have always found the planning department very helpful in discussing what is acceptable.

If you do not require planning permission do you require building consent? You will need plans and calculations for this but if you know what you want with your conversion then you might find a structural engineer can provide adequate plans - if you employ an architect he would probably engage a structural engineer to do this anyway.

If you do not require planning or building consent you might be able to work directly with a builder.

Of course if you are seeking an architects design skills then you need an architect.
