Social Networking Sites Online Status

When you are using a social networking site, like facebook, and it identifies that a contact is online, does this mean that:

a) the contact is connected to the Internet;
b) the contact has logged in to the site and has an open window (not necessarily active) showing the site; or
c) the contact has an open window showing the site which is the active window on the user's computer (i.e. the contact is actually looking at the site at the moment)?

It would be helpful to know.

    Thanks, that would certainly be the most sensible way for sites to be run, assuming it's technically feasible.

    As far as I know its b - the user is logged in, and has a window/tab open with it showing, if they're actually looking at the thing or not I dont think the sites can find out.
    It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

    Well, let's do a test. I'm going to minimise the window which shows this forum, until 9pm tonight. Tell me if the green light is showing by my posts.

    Last time I checked this forum it was 15 minutes.
    You can leave a window of the forum open but unless you refresh it or go to another forum page, the light goes out after 15 minutes.

    Don't know what happens if you leave a window open that auto-refreshes like the buddy list.

    I think you show up as online as I often leave my buddy list open and it appears as if I'm online all day.
