I have recently bought a new laptop and want to move my music from there to my new one. I have been told that there is software youc an buy that moves them from your Ipod to your laptop and this is about £15 but wondered if anyone knows any other way the transfer can be done?

Don't listen to the people that tell you that you have to 'pay' to transfer the songs.
What you want is very common, and can be done for free.
In the future, whenever you find a program that does something but asks you to 'pay' for it, search for a Freeware alternative :P
This is probably what you're looking for: http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/home/
Yamipod is one of the oldest iTunes 'alternatives'. Might take a while to get used to it (has a forum for help), but it seems to do what you want.
Edit: I've also found: http://www.softpedia.com/get/IPOD-TOOLS/Multimedia-IPOD-tools/iDump.shtmlmp3 and AAC files can be copied to/from iPod
