Ubuntu Wireless Network Speed

Installed Ubuntu 8 last week and all is okay however i'm connecting wirelessly at 1mb per sec rather than the full 54, does anybody know how i can change this?

Ah, you must have installed an older version. 8.10 fixes this problem as it has a completely new Network Manager.

It's an easy fix for your problem but my advice is to change to 8.10 as you're likely to find other issues with the older network manager. If you're running 8.10, my apologies - try this regardless

OK...

Open up a Terminal in "Applications", "Accessories", Terminal.

(You can copy the commands below using CTRL-V and paste into terminal with CTRL-SHIFT-V)
At the command prompt enter:
ifconfig
It'll list a load of stuff. Scroll up the screen until you find your wifi adapter. Note the name it is given. It'll be the one with an IP address along the lines of 192.168.x.x. It should be something like wlan0 or eth1 or similar.

Next type in
iwconfig <wifi adapter name from above> rate 54M

If you find that works then:
sudo gedit /etc/network/interfaces

and add the line or alter if it exists:
pre-up iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M

Close GEdit and then enter:
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

If it doesn't work, uninstall network-manager and install wicd instead.

Thanks for that i'll give it a go tommorrow. I am running 8.1 btw
