Surely if the landlord advertised the accommodation with broadband and neither broadband and telephone line is working, it is their responsibility.
Has anyone tried disconnecting the extensions to see if the main line is working once these are disconnected?

There is more than one way of delivering broadband.
I've got a direct cable modem; no connection to my BT telephone line at all. I've then got a wireless router to distribute the broadband around the house.
Actually went down this route because the BT telephone wiring in the house is dodgy and it was cheaper and (tidier) to get virgin to provide broadband than to get the phone cabling fixed.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. So the landlord can argue s/he doesn't have to pay the full cost.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
