Can anyone advise on how I can connect my ipod (and what I need to do) to play through a stereo system. In short I have a playlist I'd like to use for my parents 50th anniversary dinner, the venue has a stereo/speaker system, but have never had anyone request to play an ipod via it, so can't help me. Any advice would be most appreciated.

Depends on what connections the hifi has... i use a Belkin ipod dock and a 3.5mm to phono cable to plug mine into my hifi.
This might do the job also... http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=455430 -
You could also use the headphone out of the ipod to what ever the input is on the stereo system
3.5mm jack to ....phone, jack, xlr????0 -
Thank you all for your advice, may I ask if you would consider the better connection to be from the earphone plug-in or the docking station plug-in to be better, or are they both acceptable. Or is it just a difference in cost. Thanks again.0

The audio via a docking station is of a much better quality and suitable for connecting to a hifi. The headphone connection is pre-amplified and not as crisp.0

Ringo, when you say "via a docking station", does that mean I put the ipod in the docking station and then connect through to the hi-fi? Or do you mean the docking station connection thingy? Apologies for my ignorance, total gadget idiot. Thanks.0

I mean, if you put an ipod into one of these: http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=CAMB-ID10-IPOD-DOCK
Then put a cable between the dock and the hifi, the sound will be of a better quality than if you just plugged the headphone-out (on the ipod) directly into the hifi0 -
If you want something cheap and cheerful then using the headphone output via the stereo with one of these will be adequate

Do you know what the inputs to the venues system are?0 -
This would be very similar... http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=455430
