Direct debits and my credit rating

Hello all, I did a search and can't find anything specific on my question so here goes. I'm aware this is probably a really basic thing, but we're all beginners once eh?
I'm a bit worried about my credit rating, being a student and everything, and graduating in a few years into a world where credit won't be as easy to come by as it once was.
So my question is if I cancel a direct debit through my online banking will it affect my credit rating regardless of what it is that's cancelled?
I know if I was to say cancel my insurance direct debit, they asked for it and didn't go through, then that would negatively affect my credit rating, or with a bill. But does this apply to a magazine subscription or a regular charity donation that I can no longer afford?
I just don't want to make any mistakes that could have long term repercussions! Thanks for reading and for your help in advance.

I cancelled my chairty donation DD and I don't think it has had any effect....
I think its just things like bills, if you then don't pay them, the provider pushes through a mark on your credit rating.
Although saying that I have never looked at my credit ratings - I have 2 phone bills, a virgin media (for phone and broadband), gas and elec bill and on electoral roll in 2 places. Crazy Lokolo...0
