queries Before I Upgrade Me To Xp - Help Please

Hi,

Ive backed up all my files etc, uninstalled unwanted programs.....but just one question -

How on earth do I uninstall programs that do not appear in 'add/remove programs' or smart restore (think smartrestore is what came with my pc package and might not be universall for all pcs)

the pc is a packard bell ixtremem 9200 I and ive recently upgraded it with another 512 mb memory, however- when I view the memory capacity, it only shows 512 and not my original 128 as well - ive put the 128 in the second slot and checked its in right. ??????????

ANY ADVICE GRATEFULLY RECEIVED

Just addressing the uninstall issue I'm just wondering....what programs do you want to remove that you can't see in Add/Remove Programs?

When you open Add/Remove Programs do you have a little box at the top entitled "show updates"? If so tick the box next to it and that may show more.

If you're still having trouble seeing ALL programs in Add/Remove maybe this will help.

You need to open Windows Explorer and do the following:

    1.) Navigate to C:\Windows\Inf
2.) Make a copy of Sysoc.inf for backup
3.) Open the original Sysoc.inf file and it will open in Notepad
4.) Press Ctrl-H and replace the string ",hide" with ",," and save the file.

After doing this you should be able to see all of the hidden programs in Add/Remove programs.

Note that the above only applies to Windows XP, not Millennium Edition. Anyway, that'll do precisely bupkuss to the Add or Remove Programs list, but you will probably find - if it's been done correctly - that under Add/Remove Windows Components there are now a large number of new and unusual things to scare you witless. Some are absolutely vital to the well-being of Windows XP, so be extremely careful of what you choose to remove!

I never realised there were "hidden items". Thanks! :)

Just to say thanks to tanglefoot for post #3...well spotted.....ooppps....yes it would only apply to XP. Sorry about that. Must have had a blind spot there for a moment. That time of year, I guess. Oh well, I'm glad it helped out someone anyway!

    Happy Christmas all.

You're probably better off doing a "clean install" - format the Windows partition and start again. I *think* upgrade CDs can perform clean installs so long as you insert the previous Windows CD (Win ME) CD when prompted during the install.

    Spot on! :)

The only trouble is because it is a Packard Bell, they probably didn't give clanger1 a Windows ME CD, it was probably just a restore CD  which of course isn't the same.
