How to get my money back????

HI everybody, I used to be with scottish power and switched suppliers. When I finished with scottish power my electricity meter was over £200 in credit, when I asked for this back they sent me just over half of this amount and said that they are waiting for a third party to claim the remainder as their figures dont add up to what I paid into me account and the amount of electricity used. I am the only person who used my electricity card and it was kept in my purse in my bag at all times, so nobody else used it. They are refusing to give me the whole credit amount back and I dont know why. If my bank account said I was in £200 credit that is the amount I would expect to be able to withdraw. How can I make them give me what as I see is legally mine? any help gratefully recieved. Thanks....

  • If you had £200 at the time when you switched, then that £200 wouldn't have just disappeared off your meter. If that was the amount of credit, then you would've used it? I'm quite confused by your post. Did your new supplier send somebody round to clear the meter down? Although i can't see any reason why they would do that. Need more info!

If this is a prepayment meter it may be that in error payments from someone else's meter have been going to your account ( not your meter). I have often dealt with this. If not why would you have £200 credit sitting on your meter?

A prepayment meter should not have any credit when you switch apart from possibly a few pounds if you have just topped up. Often it can be because the change of supply readings are wrong so they would wait for the other supplier to claim these. It may also be the account before yours has been closed to an incorrect reading also as many people think they do not need to check readings when they move in / out of a property.

Not if the bank had reason to believe the credit showing was an error.

It is not 'legally' yours if an error has been made and another person's credit has been applied to your account.
  • The electric company have said that the credit on my account was not a mistake but that I must have lent my card to somebody as the amounts on the pre-payment meter and what they have at their end dont tally. I don't understand it either. They have said they are holding the difference that they have not refunded me, waiting for a third party claim.
  • Result!!! They have finallay decided that the money is mine and are sending me a rebate!!!!
