Warm Front Grants Scotland

I live in Scotland in a flat. Warm Front, funded by the government, say I do not qualify for a grant because I do not need new central heating. Energy savings report recommends fitting Thermal Radiator Valves to save energy and they advise the fitting of a carbon monoxide detector. Warm Front say they can only give grant to save energy via cavity wall insulation, loft insulation etc. but they cannot do this in flats. Does this mean that there is no help from Warm Front for energy saving/conservation for disabled people living in flats who do not need new central heating systems? Any information or advice most welcome, please:confused:.

  • If you are on a low income you may be entitled to use a disabled facilities grant. I'm not sure if you can use it for insulation as its normally for adaptions but you may be able to talk them into it say if your condition means you feel the cold easily.

You may be best to get in touch with them before you bother applying, if you have a social worker they should be able to advise wheat grants are available.
  • Thank you, nanokitten.

I'm guessing that you are talking about the Scottish Government Warm Deal Grant. I think they only call it Warm Front in England.

You could contact your local Energy Efficiency Advice Centre for information on energy savings schemes and grants. You can find your local centre on freefone 0800 512 012 or the Energy Savings Trust website at www.est.co.uk.

Many independent fuel companies and local authorities operate grants and schemes and also provide energy efficiency advice. Grants can be given for work connected to any energy saving measure, including, in some circumstances, the provision of gas or electric central heating. Check with your gas and electricity company.

In Scotland, you may be also able to benefit from free central heating and home insulation under the Scottish Government Central Heating Programme. This covers owner occupiers and tenants of private landlords. Details of this are on the go to the website of the Scottish Government www.scotland.gov.uk

  • That is all really helpful, allydowd, thank you for all the details and links. It must be Warm Deal, as you say, as I live in Scotland.

Scotland's Government has a new scheme (as of April 2009) Energy Assistance Package scheme which is run by the Energy Saving Trust.
You call 0800 512012 and they will run through your details and if you qualify they may be able to help you get a new central heating system - not sure about dimplex heaters though.

try scottish government site (can't post link as new) then search for energy assistance package.

    good luck
  • I also live in Scotland, my family are in receipt of Tax Credits and I am on DLA. We are home owners and have no heating in our home, having to use plug in radiators. It cost me almost £50 per week for electricity last year and I only had 3 heaters on which were insufficient. I contacted the Scottish goverments scheme and was told because I was under 60 and had no children under 5 or was not pregnant I could not get any help. I already had the loft insulation done. Surely there must be something? I have virtually no immune system and am dreading the winter.

I don't know what you mean about a flat.
The scheme doesn't matter where you live so long as you own the property and they will ask to see your mortgage documents or whathave you as prove of ownership.
The grant also will not fit radiators in kitchens (for some reason) nor any radiators in converted lofts.
It also won't cover new central heating unless your old systems matches some really old criteria.
It isn't a bad scheme though if you have a house and it doesn't have cavity insulation as it will cover that cost up to £2.5k.

I rang about help towards central heating system (electric) and was told no, even though we are low income and get dla - the reason being that we have wall cavity and loft insulation and their computers say my flat is toasty warm (it's not - storage heaters lose heat on those long winter nights).

Still, it was worth a try.

We live in Scotland and we are in the process of getting ours sorted - and have had a radiator fitted in the kitchen! There wasn't one there before.

The criteria has changed recently and if you are E - Hrated, you are eligible. It might have helped if we had been informed of this before the nice chappie rang us about fitting the replacement central heating!

Central heating now fitted, however, trying to get the loft insulation sorted has been an uphill battle of phone calls to both Scottish Gas, who oversee the scheme and the loft insulation company.

Yes, they have had a very angry woman at the other end of the phone, but as they hadn't bothered to contact me 8 weeks after having received the paperwork, can you blame me? One staff member denied that they had received the paperwork on 16th December, the next one said that the original visit on 17th December had been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions!

if they had been honest in the first place and said tha the paperwork had been lost, or the job forgotten, I would have been understanding, but in the end I was told so many variations of the truth, I didn't know what to believe

Its an excellent scheme but needs a lot of fine tuning with regard to keeping people informed as to what is happening, and returning phone calls when promised.
