iTunes and Storing Music

Hi everyone. When using iTunes, is there any way I can add new music to my ipod without having to store everything on my hard drive? At the moment, I have a 40GB 4th Gen (Yeah, I know, hopefully Santa is bringing a new one!) and I have about 37GB of stuff on iTunes. Is there any way I can delete all of that but not lose the same from my iPod when I next connect it to the PC?
Cheers in advance.

Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!

I backup my Ipod to an external HD via SharePod.
As PC that has Itunes installed on it doesnt have a massive hard drive I just sync tracks to my IPod and then delete from my ITunes account
