Finance Company say we owe and we don't!

Not sure if I'm in the right place for this so please move if necessary.
Here goes:
In October 2003 we ordered a new 3 piece suite, paid the 10% deposit, filled out the forms for 6 months interest free credit, and had it delivered in December 2003. In June 2004, the outstanding amout was paid off in full. OH even telephoned finance company (as we'd had no correspondance to say what date we should pay the balance off in full) and to check that it was ok to send a cheque, and that it would clear it time, thus accruing no interest, which was all fine. Cheque was sent, cheque cleared, and that was the last we heard until a couple of weeks ago.
OH got a phonecall from the finance company regarding this "outstanding debt" during the phone call we found out that the finance company had the wrong address down for us, even though all the paperwork we filled out at the time has our correct address on it. This was about six weeks ago. But I'm not sure what we should do now. We've heard nothing from the finance company since that phonecall, so I wondered if it was some kind of scam?
Anyone any suggestions?
All help greatly appreciated!

ask them to send you proof of the debt.
check your filing for your paperwork,
check you bank statements... does the cheque show up.
if they insist that you do still owe, contact your bank for a copy of the cheque you paid with.smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

We've got all the paperwork which shows that the cheque was cashed etc (Doesn't state who cashed it though)
Thanks will do that!Mum to 2 cheeky little monkeys!
