Dell PC cheaper if you buy as a Small Business

Hi all

If you are thinking of buying a PC or laptop from Dell I have discovered that using the small business section of the website saved me £83 when buying a 17in Ispron 9300 it cost me £733 (including VAT), on the home site it was priced up as £816 for the same spec.

The one I brought came with a rather nice free carry case and a higher capacity battery, instead of a nasty re badged Lexmark printer they give away on the home section of the site.

I tried the same with a few other laptops (the 6000 & 1300) and they all came out cheaper on the Business section ;)

Don't forget though, you lose certain rights if you buy as a small business! I think specifically you can't return the goods under the 7 (or is it 10) day cooling off. I'm sure someone will correct me if Im wrong ;)

Nope, you are right. Distance Selling Regulations won't apply.

  • I have bought a couple of Dells as a small business, and yes you are right, you cannot return anything. We tried in vain to return and exchange one system that did not have a built in modem, and boy talk about knocking your head against a brick wall - they don't want to know if you bought as a small business, wouldn't even do an exchange - thoroughly frustrating - in the end went to a local place and they put one in for £20 or so - don't get me wrong in my opinion Dell are great as long as you don't need them for anything after the sale has gone through!

this has always been standard procedure with Dell on their site presumably because of the change in your rights as a small business buyer but perhaps to encourage businesses to buy Dell.

For anyone else new to the wonderful world of Dell, have a look through https://www.dell.co.uk/outlet as you can definitely get some bargains there. The laptop i am using as we speak was £1410 on their regular site and i got it for £770 delivered from the outlet site. outlet is currently offering £100 off and free delivery which is a good saving. Always compare the outlet store price to the regular website price just to make sure you really are getting the bargain you think you are though...

Of course they do. Dell can’t ask you to waive your statutory rights. In the same way, if a business were to buy a computer from the “Home Systems” section, they wouldn’t suddenly be conferred the rights of a home consumer.

It’s been a long time sine I bought anything off the Dell website, but I’ve looked through the Terms & Conditions, and I can’t see anything that states that, by buying from the business section, you’re declaring that you’re a business. All that can be said about the two sections is that the products have been designed with the intention of being more appealing to one or other sort of buyer.

However, this doesn’t stop a company, especially one like Dell, from being completely awkward.

I previously purchased a computer through the business division of Time Computers. I got a better deal than through the retail division, the support phone number was a geographic number and not a premium rate number, and I received unlimited support.

Unfortunately, the machine was not without its problems, and after returning the item to base on two occasions, they then sent an engineer (twice) without any cost to myself - and I didn't have an onsite contract either. That still didn't resolve the problem and they just replaced the system in the end.

Overall, buying through the business division, I believe I received a far better standard of service than if I bought my PC through the retail division, and in the future I will do the same again - no matter which company I use.

When you buy from the business section you have to put a company name in or it wont accept the order so this means in Dells eyes you are a business user does it not ?

As I said, it was along time ago, so don’t know how the website works today. Either I wasn’t asked, or was able to just leave the information blank. I do remember that Dell must have just copied my personal name into the business name field, as all their correspondence had my name twice at the top. I certainly didn’t declare I was a business.

If, today, I had to fill in a company name, I’d put something like “N/A”. As part of their Trade Compliance section, you get to declare separately that it’s for home use. I can’t say for sure they’ll accept the order, but, if they ship to you, you’ll have your full consumer rights.

Another tack might be to try to buy through their call centre. Spell out that you want a specific product, and you don’t want anything from the “Home” section. I would be very surprised to hear that a member of Dell’s sales team would turn away a sale, because you were the “wrong sort of customer.”
