GAS Calorific Value

I have been reviewing my gas consumption over the last 4 years and have discovered that one bill for the 104 day period to 23/11/06 the calorific value was put as 47.4737 whereas previous periods were 39.2736 and after, the same or similar.

Has anybody else seen this - I am with Atlantic?

  • It changes from time to time because of the quality of the gas. This figure changes to make sure that the price reflects how much each the gas produces.
  • I understand that but it all comes from the same pipe - has anybody else got a figure of 47.4737 for that period?

I can only think that is an error, and I would query such a high reading. The gas is tested a various points around the grid.

It doesn't matter who you are with from the point of view of the supply as all the gas is obviously the same.
The CV of gas, which is dry, gross and measured at standard conditions of temperature and pressure, is usually quoted in megajoules per cubic metre (MJ/m3).
Gas passing through the Transco pipeline system has a CV of 37.5 MJ/m3 to 43.0 MJ/m3

Mine has never been above 40.0.
  • You can check the CVs for different areas on National Grid Transco's website:

With this the OP can check the exact date and area, for that high reading
  • Cardew,

Thanks I have already queried this bill - I cannot believe I didn't spot it before. I will let this board know the result - the difference is about £60 for the period!

If, as seems very likely, the wrong calorific value has been input to the computer program, then it is probable that every bill for Atlantic for that period is also wrong and all customers should get a rebate.

Ofgem may well be interested in your results!!!
