Warning:driving in South Africa

Just a helpful warning on licence requirements.
I have hired a car in South Africa 3 times this last year and many times before.I have always just been asked for and used my UK driving licence.
Last week was stopped by a routine police check on N3 south of Jo-burg. Police refused to accept my UK driving licence as vaild as 'it has no photo' 'how do I know this you'...even when offered passport as backup. Very 'jobsworth' policeman who took some 'encouragement' to let us proceed...we wern't in a position to debate as on way to airport.
But, checking SA embassy site appears he was right.
Strictly an International Driving Permit is required but a new style photo driving licence should be acceptable.
