I use firefox version 2.0.0.17 as a browser, this computer is too old to update to a modern version. I have had a window from Rapidantivirus appear, asking me to install it, which I haven't, as I'm not sure if this is spyware in itself, or just advertising. Is there a, ( preferably free), download/online programme that I can safely use to check my computer and remove any spyware, trojans etc? I'm not techie minded, but use on-line banking, so am worried about this.

It's not really safe to use anything under 10.4.11 now online, due to the DNS vulnerabilities which was discovered recently and affects nearly all computers recently (Macs, PCs, etc).
The oldest Mac OS X system to safely use online from Apple fully patched is 10.4 (Tiger) patched freely to 10.4.11. Apple are not releasing patches for their older systems including 10.3, 10.2 and 10.1 - these are all obsolete and feature a major security issues which will not be fixed.
There are free Mac Virus checkers such as Clam XAV, but you still need to stop using this old system online.
Additionally You need to check your DNS and Name Service settings in your router and network pane of the Control Panel to ensure nothing has been compromised.
Rapid Antivirius as far as I'm aware is a scam/spyware and to be avoided.0 -
Thankyou very much, should I stop using messenger as well? I will try to work out how to check my DNS and name server settings, and see what Clam XAV shows up.0
