Missed flight - return cancelled

My son missed his flight from Newcastle to Cardiff (with Flybe) (so he got a train) and when he went to catch his return flight, was told that the whole ticket had been cancelled. I had to fork out another £93 (and £1.99 for using a debit card) to get him another flight.

Now, you money savvy people probably know about all this, but to us, it was new and a shock. I understand that it was all somewhere in the terms and conditions and that nearly all the airlines do this, but that doesn't make it right.

Is there a scheme like the bank charges protest to try to change this position? If anyone has any experience of this money-grabbing practice, please advise me. Many thanks from a broker-than-usual parent ...

On some airlines who operate a return ticketing situation this applies and others who operate a single sector ticketing it doesn't.

Some airlines do contact passengers to advise them that their return has been cancelled.

    did they refund the money?
Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?
  • They didn't refund the money and that's what seems galling. Has anyone had any luck reclaiming money from Flybe or any other airline for a return flight which they cancelled?

Flybe didn't cancel the flight - your son did by missing the first flight which invalidated the remainder of the flights on the itinerary.

So your chances of getting money out of Flybe are somewhere around zero UNLESS your son had bought a refundable ticket.

Isn't the answer to book 2 completely separte flights and not the return on the same booking?

You will have to consider the effect of debit/credit card fee.
