I think it all depends on how long you have lived in your house and what sort of credit rating you have. They can then check up,not sure how ,but i have not had to give ID with the AA savings(They are just agents ) or Northern Rock.I found Halifax to be a right pain, they insisted on me taking ID to a branch and i don't have one near by.Yet i had my mortgage with them, still have a £1 owing so they will store the deeds!!
Coventry i had to send ID.Bradford and Bingley was a while ago but i think i was ok there too.But as i say, what may be ok for me doesn't mean it will be the same for everyone,as i have lived in the same place for 18 years.
Even so,most accounts will need a cheque from you to open the account ,because of the money launderuing rules, and you will then need log in and passwords ,though that could be done by email. So there is bound to be some paperwork involved.0 -
Ironically, I found the Icelandic ones, Kaupthind Edge and Icesave to be amongst the easiest to open. I think they'd have let me open an account if I said I was Jack the Ripper, they were that keen to get customers :rotfl: . But that's consigned to history.
The latest one I've opened is with Birmingham Midshires and that completed online without any proofs being needed. I don't recall them even asking for driver licence or passport either? All they did insist on was that I make the first deposit by cheque so that they could see and confirm my linked account details.

Birmingham Midshires put me through the wringer - had to send photocopies of driving licence and passport, utiliity bills etc. And pay a local solicitor £10 to certify that they were genuine copies... I don't generally have such hurdles thrown at me for new accounts.0

YBS were easy as were Skipton for me, but it depends on your status as per Froglet's post. Many initially check via the electoral roll. But most also require a confirmation signature and opening cheque, although not all.
Tescos are a total nightmare, covered in a separate thread, although offering 6.5% internet access at the moment!0 -

Yes, I found that an easy one too. Even better with B&B is that once you've opened an account with them, it's dead easy to log-in and open additional accounts without having to go through security checks again.
