Driving to Italy - (lake Garda)

I wanted some suggestions about where to stay whilst on route to lake garda next year.
We are getting the ferry to Dunkirk (Norfolk line) and are going to spend the night there and setting off on the morning - We have a 2 year old with is too so dont want to travel too long without stopping so was thinking travel 3 hours in the morning stop for lunch then travel another 3 hours stay the night there and do the same the next day.
Has anyone done this? - where is best to stay?

A 2 year old might not suit my suggestion but why not grab a lonely planet guide and just set off. When you get somewhere nice give a few places a ring or just stop when you see a nice place?
I do most of my travelling this way and find it fascinating where you end up. Not the cheapest but certainly more fun. We did it with our 3 year old last year (she is now 4) and it was great but we did end up coming back to a small hotel which was quiet but had a pool etc.
Alternatively get onto the French/Italian tourist sites via Google and spend some time browsing. The great thing about not staying long is if its really awful you only have one to suffer

check out the route on www.mappy.com, it will give you approximate timings so you can work out where you're likely to stop then it will list hotels in that locality.0
