Windows XP - IE6 - Status bar disappears

I've just got Windows XP Home on my new PC (was using Windows 98 on the old one). All is going OK, except that when I use Internet Explorer the Status Bar at the bottom of the IE window isn't there. I can get it to appear with View, Status Bar - but this only seems to work for one window and I keep having to do it again.
There's undoubtedly an option I haven't spotted, to get Status Bar displayed permanently. Any kind soul out there able to advise me? Thanks in advance!
