Will I ever receive this cheque?

As I only worked 37 of 52 weeks of 07/08 tax year, I decided to put in a claim for a tax rebate, in early June. Told me that it will be 6 weeks to process and send out the cheque.

I phoned again around 25th July as I haven't received a thing. Said they are working on claims submitted around 20th April.

I phoned back around 19th Sept and they told me that they did send a cheque on 24th June (why didn't the person I spoke in July to mentioned this?). Said will see if the cheque has been cashed and if not, will take 3-4 weeks to get authorisation to get the cheque reissued.

Now I haven't heard a dicky bird from them and I should have received the cheque around mid October. It's getting beyond the joke. If the reissued cheque has been lost in the post, I will be screaming. If they bothered to send cheques via recorded delivery, I would not be writing this post and getting stressed. Based on tax calculators on various websites, the amount is £295-335 - a lot of money for someone who has been unemployed for 3.5 months. It's a lot of money for anyone.

Meanwhile, I took a temp role for a month and was deducted emergency tax. I submitted my claim on 24th July and I received my cheque for £108, ten days ago.

What shall I do when I contact the tax office? Also on the subject, I write down the phone number I used to speak to the person. When I phone that number again, they say 'you've got the wrong number'. Stop playing games with me and give me £300 odd quid.

They're taking an age. I was self employed up until April and submitted my SA form for them to calculate my tax bill in June. Phoned them last week to check they'd had it because of the 31 Oct deadline and the fact in previous years, I've usually had a bill. They had received it but it was in processing.

Looks like HMRC bringing forward the deadline for paper self assessment returns to Oct 31 has had quite an impact.

Because you pay self employed tax in advance, I'm looking at £1000's because I effectively paid the current years full tax bill based on last years income already so I'm even more eager to get it than you. :)

One reason for the delay is that the envelope you received to return your tax return in has a central postal address on it. That means it goes there and then once it's sorted and logged as received it gets sent to other offices. Sort of musical tax returns with an increased chance of it getting lost as it travels the country.
