Fed up with everyone: British Gas x 2, plumber, my garage in fact everyone!

It's been one of those days. I'd arranged to work at home as the car needed to go into the garage and I had arranged for some workmen to call.
  • Daughter's boyfriend wouldn't give me a lift back from garage so had to get a taxi back (he was tired as working hard - he should try my life!)
  • British Gas engineer arrived to fix leaking radiator (spotted at BGas inspection last week). He arrived in am (booked for pm) and said I needed a new radiator - which I could have told him. This will take a week as it has to be ordered.
  • British Gas engineer no. 2 arrived to fit parts to gas cooker (identified during service last week). He had new knob but no 'tap' nor new grill pan. These have to be ordered (which I thought had happened last week) and will take a week.
  • Plumber supposed to call in morning to have a look at leaking waste extractor pump in utility room. He arrived at 4 pm. Pulled out washing machine and not sure if it is the pipes or the pump. Suggested I watch it for a few days and get back to him (agggh.. it's been leaking waste water!) as it would be much cheaper to replace pipes.
  • Garage hadn't phoned so I contacted them at 5, saying is it fixed as I need the car tomorrow. They said they're not sure if it'll be done by 6... and I needed to book a taxi to get there.
  • They phoned at 5.40 saying the car was ready so I phoned taxi that 'would be there in less than 5' but took 10 mins.
  • I phoned garage to say please stay open as I'm on my way. Arrived at 6.10 and paid bill.
  • Car is working perfectly but somehow the radio/CD player has been locked and I dont have a code!
The good news is I've found a thread on MSE where someone is offering codes to unlock car radios (if I can find the serial number). There is hope yet!

I could do with a glass of wine (though none in house :( )

    Actually things have got better!
    • The car was expensive to get done but is fixed and running fine.
    • I was able to drive 170 miles on Friday instead of a 4 hour train journey.
    • I found a thread on MSE offering unlock codes for radios. Two posters helped me to find an M number and gave the unlock code, so at least I had a radio during my trip.
    • When I arrived and parked my car the parking metre was out of order. I was running late and the nearest meter was quite a way away. A young fellow student arrived at the same time, took my £1 parking money and ran across the car park to get both our tickets. Chivalry isn't dead!
    • I've cleaned behind pump/washing machine and the problem seems to be a faulty pipe joint rather than the pump, so hopefully I'll save lots of money there.
    • Found some fab silk curtains in a sale at B&Q today that are perfect for my lounge.
    • I bought a nice bottle of wine (also claret, the colour of the curtains, and very smooth) and I'm having a well earned glass.
    • I do have a lottery ticket but haven't seen the results yet (fingers crossed!)
So, being an optimist, the message is - things can only get better!

  • No, the message is - you generally have a positive attitude to life, so you will find that you are luckier / happier / more contented than other people. Okay, you had a bad day, with plenty of negative things happening outside your control - yet shortly afterwards, you are able to list the positives that you perceive and have put it behind you. Some people would only be able to focus on the negative things, and feel angry / frustrated / unhappy as a result. So well done!

Someone once asked me how our recent holiday had gone, and I said it was great, we were directly on the beach, the weather was perfect, the room wasn't great but it was clean and we only slept there so it didn't really matter, the hotel entertainment was spot on and we'd had fun trying to make ourselves understood in a foreign language. She said another couple we knew had had an awful holiday, their rooms were a dump, the people were useless because they couldn't understand english, there was building work going on near the hotel, the entertainment was dire, the flight was too long, etc etc. Yet, we had actually gone on holiday WITH this other couple!! The difference was we were looking to enjoy our holiday by making the most of the good things on offer - they were just looking for things to be miserable about.
