Hi All,
my friends laptop gets VERY HOT, and although it's not shutting itself down yet, she is worried.
It's on a desk and she has it sat on coasters to give air around it, but this makes no difference. Someone has suggested a "cooling fan" but we can't find one online. Any suggestions?? Do these fans really work? and if so, where can she get one from?
Thanks everyone.

Let me guess....is it a Dell? Either way, a Laptop is designed to withstand heat, if the fan does not run then their is a fault, if it does run and still gets hot that is because taht was the way it was designed so don't worry too much, just keep it well ventilated. No need to buy "mod's" for laptops, just don't cover the air vents, if the laptop is operating outside of it's safe environment then the CPU will shutdown, if it is a Pentium Class machine then you should be sound as Pentium CPU's and Intel chipsets are very robust.Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0

Thanks Proliant, I'll pass that on. (I have no idea what make it is). I take it even if we did manage to find a fan, it wouldn't make any difference? Call of Duty widow :rolleyes:0

Tbh any external fan is going to be useless, the plastic case wont let much air into the parts to keep it cool.
The main things to keep cool are the PSU (power supply unit) and the actual chip itself.
The rest is just niff naff and dont do alot.
if you were a little worried, then give it a rest now and then. But my acer is on nearly for 14-16hours a day, and underneath its red raw, but the fan never runs until i load it up with lots of work to do.
Mainly coping files from one source to another.0 -
Thanks Browntoa, I thought it was something along the lines of the cooling fan my DH has plugged in the front of his PS3! I didn't think it would be a pad with fans in !! Call of Duty widow :rolleyes:0

Here is another one:

Used to have big heat problems with a Sony laptop until I used this. It also raised the laptop to a more comfortable height for me.

mine gets VERY hot too - can hear the fan going mad right now....but if it dies I bought insurance so would get a good replacement
skint but in luv :kisses2:0 -
My laptop also gets seriously hot, it's shut it's self down once (when turned on within a thick black case). Unlike my desktop, which ended up with a blown the power supply. Most laptop are very efficient at displacing heat/capable at working at high temperatures.0
