What winter jams can I make?

We made strawberry in the summer, followed by blackberry and blackberry and apple. Can anyone recommend any good jams we could make with fruit that is available this time of year? I really dont want to go back to shop bought jam after enjoying these so much! My children love making jam!

I have just made quince jelly myself, but that is not a fruit easily available. There should still be marrows around though - I am sure I have seen posts for marrow jam on this forum, but never made it myself. A friend of mine does a very nice kiwi jam. Otherwise, if you do want to make jam all year round, think of freezing some fruit in season when you can get it cheap. I tend to freeze some of my raspberry glut for jamming later.

  • Marrow and ginger is the only one that springs to mind.

I'm making jam tomorrow from frozen summer fruit.

I think the thing to do is to make a lot of jam next summer and early autumn so that it lasts through the winter. Jams and jellies were after all a way of preserving fruit so that you can enjoy it when there isn't any fresh fruit around.
  • Dried apricots make nice jam. Or you could use frozen fruit from the supermarket.

  • I buy the frozen summer fruits or black forest fruits - whichever is on offer in Tescos. I weigh the fruit and heat it with the same amount of sugar until the sugar is dissolved and then I rub it through a metal sieve and return to the heat and boil until setting point is reached. This doesn't make jelly but it makes lovely seedless jam which my very fussy kids will eat (they don't like pips!)

Here's one for jam made using tinned apricots and peaches.
  • We're coming up to marmalade time; Seville oranges have a short season in January ;) You can make marmalades from other citrus fruits, too :DHere's one, and here's another :T

I'm like thriftlady - I make jams and other preserves as the fruit is in season. I make as much as I need to keep us going through the year. I currently have 70 jars of preserves in my pantry :D

  • I make my jam with fruit in season too but last year I gave it all away for Christmas and I needed some quick prezzies in march.. So I made a few jars of jam with frozen fruit from the farm shop. It was quite reasonable and one bag made 5 jars of jam with no food miles (apart from the sugar)

  • 'Fraid you won't get damsons or blackberries now. They're well over (August-September).

What about lemon curd? You can make that year round. It doesn't have such a long shelflife and it isn't as cheap to make because you need eggs and butter. It is gorgeous though -you can do it with limes, oranges, passionfruit to name a few.

Another thought -cranberry jam. Expensive and imported but seasonal;)
