Low income, no kids, under 25, Working tax credit?

Heya guys and gals, hoping you can help me out a little here!

I was made redudent from my £13,100 job about 2 months ago. I was out of work for about 6 hours when my old shop job offered me some work. Im currently working between 20-30 hours per week (varies each week) on minimum wage. This month i took home £567.

I live with my partner who is at uni. She gets a student loan of £5,500ish. She also works 10 hours per week. We split everything 50/50.

At the moment, i cant afford to pay 1/2 of everything, my own debts (£70~ per month) and still have money to buy food/elec'y/clothes etc.

Im 20, partner is 21. No kids. Ive looked online and filled out entitlement guestimates and apparently im entitled to nothing because we dont have a child and arnt over 25.

Hows this fair? is everyone suposed to live with parents until 25? What, if anything, can i claim help with? I dont want to have to leave this job to claim JSA and housing benefit, i want to be able to pay it myself! Help!

As you have already confirmed, you are not entitled to any state assistance.

If you did choose to leave your job voluntarily, your JSA claim would be sanctioned, and therefore taking into account your partners income, you would not receive anything (although you may get some LHA). You certainly would not be better off than you are now.

You have already checked your entitlement. I'm not sure what you want people to say?

  • If you are struggling with your debts you should try and negotiate with your creditors lower monthly payments you can afford. You need to complete a budget sheet listing your incomings/outgoings and send that to your creditor with a offer of payment. You need to work it out pro rata with all your debts. The national debtline has some really good information and template letters you can use also you should book an appointment with your local cab for debt advice.
  • Why is it that people over 25 are entitled to help? It seems the only way to get any assistance with anything in the country is to have kids

Not everyone over 25 has children!

As with all benefits, there has to be a cut off age somewhere. The govt decided that WTC's should only be available to single people 25 and over.

If you are very concerned, you really need to ask your MP to take the issue up on your behalf.

Even if you were over 25 you wouldn't get WTC as you have to work 30+ hours per week and they would take you partner's income into account.

You really need to get a full time job, rather than thinking about benefits!
