Double glazing quote.

Hi all,

I'm looking at getting my mums house double glazed before I move out.

Just had Fineline around for a quote. After 4 hours the guy gave me a quote for £5300, this is for:

3 windows approx 1000 x 500
2 windows approx 1000 x 1000
1 window approx 1500 x 1500
2 windows approx 1500 x 1000

(Using their own Tricept make of PVCU windows)

A back door & a composite front door.

This come comes with their own 10 yr warranty & a further 15 yrs supplied by the Glass & Glazing federation.

The windows are white PVCU (apparently PVCU is better than UPVC??) with plain glass & 10 openings between the 8 windows.

The front door is a entance esprit two. Made of GRP, with 2 glass panels & 9 point locking system (pas 24??)

The back door is just a single glass panel door.

Apparently the Tricept windows here have a glazing bridge that stops moisture getting to the desicant spacer bar.

Does this sound about right?

Thanks in advance,

yes along with every other window suppliers frames fitted in accordance with ggf guidlines .the price you have been quoted is at least 1k over in my opinion and that is based on a quality profile (Kommerling gold and rockdoor composite door).the profile this company are using i havent heard of before now .where in the country are you

Cannot help you with the quote itself.

I do not recongnise the company name as being a national one (apologies to them if wrong). No disrespect to the company quoting, I would check how long they've existed under the same name and how much of the quote covers the warranty (a warranty is only any good if the company still exists and I have seen many local companies disappear after a few years).

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I live in Rochester, Kent. The Tricept windows are what they make themselves I believe.

The company isn’t a national one, but I think they're quite big in the south east & have been trading under that name for 30 years, as per the salesman. I believe as the company are members of the Glass & Glazing federation the warranty would be taken up by them should the company go bust as I understand it.

The only person that has been recommended (by my uncle in-law) works for a firm that is FENSA registered & a member of the Glass & Glazing federation has said he'd do it as a private job & is coming to give me a quote on Tuesday.

He uses Rehau extrusions (different to the one his firm uses - Tricept). I understand that that I'd have to get the work signed off separately & that I'd only get a small manufacturers warranty instead of a 10 or 25 year one covered by GGF. But my reasoning is that If a decent window is being used & installed by a competent guy (the fact that when he's working for his firm he's governed by FENSA & the Glass & Glazing federation.) Then I shouldn't need a 10 year guarantee?

    Cheers, Gaz

that in itself tells you something rehau, kommerling, veka and profile 22 are ther only products we would consider using .dont have it done as a job on the side

  • Sorry to jump in but I was thinking of getting double glazing. What is there to look for in terms of features that are essential to have on the windows and can you still get windows of that quality at a reasonable price?

Ie they always try to baffle you with a special gas they put inside the air gap and other technical details, glass which lets heat in but not out etc. Is this worth the money? Plikington K I think its called

Gaz, don't get anyone to do your double glazing on the side, it's too risky.
All sorts of things can go wrong even with the best products, do you think he's going to replace your misted sealed units 7 years after installation or reset your dropped back door after 2 years?
Your 10 year guarantee is well worth the extra expense, if you get 25 years then even better.
I must say though the price is a bit high as a6windows suggests, you should get at least 3/4 written quotes from local companies.
Again as a6windows suggests, find a firm that sells REHAU, PROFILE22 or VEKA.
You shouldn't pay no more than £4,500 all in and still get a minimum 10 years INSURANCE BACKED guarantee on frames, glass & hardware,
FENSA certificate too (this is required should you ever come to sell your property).

Standard features to look out for:

    internally glazed
fully sculptured 70mm profile (preferably REHAU, PROFILE22 or VEKA)
    shootbolt locking system
    28mm sealed units
minimum 10 year INSURANCE BACKED guarantee
    FENSA registered

Pilkington K glass is just a brand, there are other brands which offer a better U-value than pilks K glass, just ask the nice salesman how there glass performs and remember the lower the U-value the more thermally efficient the glass is.
Look to get at least 3/4 written quotes.
  • fully sculptured 70mm profile (preferably REHAU, PROFILE22 or VEKA)</p>have used all the above profiles and would say in my opinion kommerling is better

  • Thanks for confirming my doubts about having it done as a private job. At the end of the day even if it is a fair bit cheaper, it’s going to be my mum stuck with the hassle of getting it sorted if there is problems a few years down the line. So I don’t think it’s worth the risk.

Just had a company called Britelite to give me a quote. For the windows & doors mentioned in the original post plus an extra back door (half glass/half panel) & they have quoted £5396 which sounds a bit more reasonable.

They use a profile called Duraflex & the windows are argon filled B rated throughout. I’ve heard of duraflex before but not sure how good it is? I know it’s not one of the big four mentioned previously but I’m having trouble finding a company that is FENSA registered, member of the Glass & Glazing federation & gives a 10 year insurance backed garuntee & uses one of those profiles in my local area.
  • the company you choose doent have to be part of the glass and glazing federation were not .fensa regulations are set out by the glass and glazing federation (ggf)and is under the ggf control.all companies have to offer you a ten year guarantee its part of the fensa regulations
