Why can 't you eat them just now? Cockles in jars will be well cooked and shouldn't pose any risk of food poisoning. Totally different to fresh shellfish which I can understand you avoiding0 -

I like them with pasta in a tomatoey sauce....think it's meant to be clams really (vongole?) but cockles are just as good.

Well I guess you could convince me if their native beach was the Caribean but as Morecambe seems to be the place then I may leave that one:D
