advice/help

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and claiming benefit also and need some help and advice on what I need to be doing as I have some mental issues that affect my concentration and understanding.

I've been claiming IB for a couple of weeks or so and have just received an IB50 through the post, what is this for? it mentions a med4 form but I only need to include one if the letter that accompanied the IB50 requested one, it didn't, why is this and what is it for?

I'm currently struggling to pay my mortgage am I entitled to any other help apart from IB and council tax benefit?

Thanks for your time.

  • Hi, a IB50 is used to assess whether you are capable for going back to work. Look at this link which gives exellent advice on how to fill an IB50 out.

In regards to your mortgage you need to speak to your lender and let them know what is happening. Do you have payment protection that includes sickness? Can you take a payment holiday from your mortgage? You need to go to your local cab who will be able to discuss your options with you.

The Med 4 is a more detailed medical certificate that gives your Doctor an opportunity to provide more details about your condition. It is usually requested when the first IB50 is sent.
  • Hi,

    Thanks for the help.

Regarding the med4 form, this is my first IB50 and there is no mention of the med4 on the letter that accompanied the IB50.

unfortunately I think I may have to sell the house as I can't see any sort of help towards housing costs, I think there is a 39 week wait until I am entitled to help.

thanks for the link regarding filling in the IB50.
  • Would your mortgage lender give you a payment holiday? Ours did, when we were having a struggle paying - I rang up and said we could not afford the mortgage, could they help, and they gave us a six-month payment holiday.

I do think it is bad that there is so little help for those with mortgages, when those who rent sometimes get the whole lot paid, but that's the rules, unfortunately.

  • unfortunately I'm only allowed one payment holiday for the term of the mortgage and I took this last year when I first had problems and had to leave work, I do have payment protection but it doesn't cover all the monthly payment.

can anything be done with bank loans? or is it just a case of negotiating with the bank?
  • Is the bank loan secured? If it is not then worry about paying your mortgage firstly above any unsecure loan. If you are only recieving benefits you should only make a token payment of a £1 per month. I have included the link to the self help debt pack that I give to my clients.
